A Ladder to the Sky

Overall Rating: Loved it! ❤️

“You’ve heard the old proverb about ambition, that it’s like setting a ladder to the sky”

The Synopsis:

Maurice Swift is handsome, charming, and hungry for fame. The one thing he doesn’t have is talent – but he’s not about to let a detail like that stand in his way. After all, a would-be writer can find stories anywhere. They don’t need to be his own

Nikaleigh’s Thoughts:

General: This book of the month selection was an easy 5 out of 5 for me. Its historic roots, magnetic characters, and a story line that one could argue boarders on psychological thriller left it being one that I won’t easily forget.

The Characters: This is the first novel I’ve read where you’re meant to detest the protagonist, a point that initially had me worried – how can I spend hours in the life of someone I’m supposed to dislike? Yet somehow, the author managed to create a person so magnetizing you just wanted to keep reading his story.  I can’t give enough praise to the author’s ability to bring his characters to life.

Plot / Pacing: My esteem for the character carries right over to the plot. Being categorized as literary fiction, the plot of this novel is more about the progression of the protagonist’s life than it is about making it to an end point. He’s complex, convoluted, and blindly ambitious; stopping at nothing to get what he wants. An aspect that makes this usually slower paced genre an absolute page turner.

Why 5 stars?: The fascinating complexity of the main character makes this a book that is sure to stay one of my all-time favorites.

Should you read it?: Yes! Yes! Yes!
