Overall Rating: Liked it!🌟
An Unkindness of Magicians was my 5th book for July (if you read my five tips/TBR post, you’ll know what that means! Yay! ) and my 40th read for the year! Described as a Fantasy Thriller, it’s my first read from author Kat Howard.
There is a whole other realm operating right under the noses of everyday people in New York City, The Unseen World: an underground system of powerful magicians – but their power is not their own.
Sydney is an outsider with strength unparalleled by the other magicians, and now, as their magic seems to be failing, they’re growing suspicious of her; but Syndey knows what’s really happening to their magic and she’s determined to stop it.
Sydney isn’t an ordinary magician; she’s from the house of Shadows – a place where magicians are sacrificed to siphon their power for the use of others and now that she’s free, she’s set on destroying the corruption.
I thoroughly enjoyed the world created in this novel and got through the book in just two sittings. The description of fantasy thriller fits the story well; some moments will have you on the edge of your seat, all of it engulfed in magic.
The overall pace of the book was fast, but admittedly, there are some critical moments in the end that I wish had been a bit slower and more detailed. The final battles had the potential to be on par with those in Harry Potter but unfortunately lacked the detail.
As a whole, this was a very entertaining read, and if the term ‘fantasy thriller’ sounds appealing to you – I recommend you check it out. 😊
